Harvard broadens my ability in teaching and research

Dr Mohammad Tarikul Islam, Professor in Government and Politics, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh, and Visiting Professor (Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge)
My perspectives on research and teaching have been influenced by many world-leading institutions, including Jahangirnagar University, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, the School of Oriental and African Studies,
Harvard University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where I studied and was affiliated in different prestigious positions. I came to the realization during my academic career that hard work alone would not get me where I wanted to go.
I was able to concentrate on my goals of expanding my knowledge and building a reputation in the academic community because of my educational background at beloved Jahangirnagar, where I currently teach as a professor. I want to share my experiences at Harvard since the beginning of 2024 in my story, along with some of my favorite memories to date.
This form of sharing will encourage many potential scholars and intellectuals from the global south to join Harvard to attain greatness in teaching and research, which I wholeheartedly believe in.
As I reflect on my time at Harvard throughout the years (I was a visiting scholar in 2024 and a visiting scientist in 2025), I am more aware of the people who were around me at those times than I am of the actual events.
In addition to having access to a vast library and world-class researchers, Harvard visiting scholars, visiting professors, and visiting scientists also have the chance to attend lectures, seminars, and workshops and join the academic community, which fosters professional growth and academic networking.
I have made the most of the chance given to me to learn from the most esteemed Harvard. As a Visiting Scholar, I frequently find myself adjusting to departmental life, engaging with faculty and students, and broadening my academic networks.
The role of visiting scientist allows me to share my knowledge and gain fresh ideas, which benefits the academic community. Scholars like me join a dynamic intellectual community and frequently interact with other visiting students and teachers.
I had a supportive network of like-minded individuals at Harvard, including my friends, sisters, mentors, and coworkers. Yes, Harvard has also provided me with an excellent education and the resources I need to succeed in whichever career I choose. However, the individuals who are admitted have the secret.
The individuals I have met, the locations I have seen, and the experiences I've had at the Weatherhead Centre, Kennedy School of Government, and Harvard Humanitarian Initiative have all contributed to some of my most treasured memories.
When I consider the academics, instructors, students, and administrators that were all around me, I realise that they all had a strong desire to succeed despite coming from different backgrounds and having different life experiences.
Those who call Harvard home keep me motivated and rooted in my own views. Everyone at Harvard agrees that the finest part of Harvard is the people.
To be honest, Harvard's student body is one of the most diverse, open-minded, driven, enjoyable, and unique communities I have happily been a part of. They have inspired me to be a better person, push myself more, and question my own norms and beliefs. They've also been with me during some of my most difficult and joyous times.
I was relieved to discover so many world-renowned professors and faculty who are at the cutting edge of their areas! More importantly, they are eager and happy to discuss their work and get to know one another.
You'd be astonished to learn that Harvard has more research opportunities than undergraduates to fill! I was fortunate to be able to participate in a number of seminars as a discussant and speaker during my first month of stay, in addition to conducting research.
I had the opportunity to learn about prominent researchers' teaching and research experiences, which I am using to further my own attempts to excel in both areas.
During my time at Harvard, I focused mostly on research and teaching as a visiting scholar and full professor at Jahangirnagar University.
Expectations sprang to the surface to participate in seminars, workshops, and speeches as a discussant, speaker, and organiser. At Harvard, I had my first opportunity to travel. During the summer, I had the opportunity to explore Boston by visiting the John F Kennedy Presidential Library and the MIT campus.
My place of residence in Boston provided me with new adventures. I have fond recollections of spending time with my colleagues, friends, and students in each of these locations. At Harvard, learning occurs in a variety of ways. Some of my most meaningful moments at Harvard occurred during calm times.
As a visiting scholar, visiting scientist, and visiting professor, I genuinely had the nicest time at Harvard, learning new things about myself and my fields of teaching and research. Writing for the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative blog on a regular basis reflects positively on my academic credentials. I strongly advise everyone to investigate any subjects that pique their interest. I think everyone would benefit from this wonderful, enlightening program.
For those who are eager to attend prestigious universities like Harvard, Oxford, or Cambridge, I have some advice. Please continue to pursue your dreams with zeal, confer with current students and the admission offices of various departments and universities, and make the necessary preparations. By remaining inquisitive, planning consciously, and leading a balanced life, you can achieve your goal
