The government has allocated Tk6.41 crore in special grants to benefit 7,100 teachers, students, and educational institutions across Bangladesh, prioritising underprivileged communities, backward regions, and individuals facing health and economic hardships.
The initiative is part of the "Special Grants" category under the Secondary and Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education for the current fiscal year, as confirmed in an official circular signed by Liuza-ul-Jannah, Deputy Secretary of the department, on June 17.
According to the circular, 101 educational institutions will receive Tk1 lakh each, totaling Tk1.01 crore, while 250 teachers and staff will each be given Tk30,000, amounting to Tk75 lakh. Among the student beneficiaries: 4,047 secondary school students will each receive Tk8,000 (total: Tk3.24 crore) . 1,428 higher secondary (Class XI–XII) students will receive Tk9,000 each (total: Tk1.29 crore) . 1,274 university and graduate-level students will receive Tk10,000 each (total: Tk1.27 crore) .
The grant will be distributed digitally. Educational institutions will receive funds via bank transfers, while teachers, staff, and students will get their allocations through “Nagad,” the Bangladesh Post Office’s mobile financial service. Earlier, the Ministry of Education had formulated a detailed policy guideline for special grants to private institutions and both public and private teachers and students. Grant selection is being conducted in two stages: initially by a nine-member district committee chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, and finally by a 13-member scrutiny committee headed by the Additional Secretary (Admin & Finance) of the Ministry. Ministry sources confirm that preference is being given to: Institutions in remote or disadvantaged areas Teachers and students with critical illnesses such as cancer, kidney or heart diseases, diabetes, and physical injuries Students from low-income families, the disabled, third gender, and other marginalised or backward communities. Speaking to BSS, Siddique Zobair, Senior Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, said:“The government is working to ensure equal access to education for all. These special grants are aimed at supporting backward yet promising institutions as well as affected teachers, staff, and students in need.” This move is part of the government's broader effort to promote equity in education and provide direct support to vulnerable groups in the country’s academic landscape.
