Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to address the media today to provide details on the government's controversial plan to take control of Gaza City. This announcement comes ahead of an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting convened to discuss the implications of the proposed military operation.

The Israeli security cabinet has approved a plan to escalate military operations in Gaza City, aiming to dismantle Hamas and establish a new civil administration. The operation is expected to involve a significant ground offensive, potentially leading to the displacement of up to one million Palestinians. The plan has drawn widespread international condemnation, with leaders from many countries expressing concern that the move would exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and violate international law.

In response to the plan, mass protests have erupted across Israel, with tens of thousands of demonstrators calling for a ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas. The Israeli Defence Forces have also expressed reservations, warning that the operation could endanger the lives of the remaining hostages and further strain military resources.

The United Nations has labelled the proposed takeover as a "dangerous escalation," urging Israel to reconsider its approach. The emergency Security Council meeting is expected to address these concerns and explore potential avenues for de-escalation and humanitarian assistance.

Prime Minister Netanyahu's upcoming press conference is anticipated to provide further details on the government's strategy and respond to international and domestic criticism.
