Zelenskyy Arrives in Britain for Talks with King Charles, PM Starmer and Military Personnel

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in London today to advance strategic defence collaboration between Ukraine and the United Kingdom and to advocate for intensified measures against the Russian Federation.
According to a statement released by his spokesperson via Reuters, Zelenskyy’s itinerary includes a private audience with King Charles III, high-level discussions with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and meetings with the Speakers of both Houses of Parliament, in addition to consultations with defence experts and Ukrainian military personnel based in the UK.
His arrival was met with notable public enthusiasm outside Downing Street, where he was received warmly by Prime Minister Starmer, who reaffirmed the UK’s unwavering support, asserting that Ukraine has “full backing across the United Kingdom” and pledging continued solidarity “for as long as it may take.” This affirmation follows the UK’s recent approval of a £2.26 billion defence loan, funded by proceeds from frozen Russian assets, marking a substantial escalation in Britain’s financial commitment to Ukraine’s military procurement.
A key component of Zelenskyy’s visit is his engagement with Ukrainian troops participating in Operation Interflex, a British-led training initiative that has prepared over 50,000 Ukrainian service members—including pilots, engineers, and armoured units—for combat operations. This collaboration underscores the shared tactical objectives and moral solidarity between the two nations. Notably, Zelenskyy’s visit aligns with the upcoming 2025 London Summit on Ukraine, to be convened on March 2 at Lancaster House under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Starmer.
The summit aims to foster a multinational “coalition of the willing” comprising NATO, EU, and other allied stakeholders, with the goal of reinforcing Ukraine’s long-term security architecture and deterring future Russian incursions.
King Charles’s invitation to President Zelenskyy signals a deepening of diplomatic and symbolic ties, following their previous encounter during a surprise visit in 2023. In a development not announced in advance, Zelenskyy arrived at Windsor Castle just after 1 p.m. for a private lunch with the King, ahead of his scheduled talks with the Prime Minister later today.
Beyond the ceremonial dimension, substantive negotiations are expected between Zelenskyy and Starmer to finalise expanded defence and technological accords, potentially encompassing long-range strike capabilities, maritime security cooperation, and drone warfare systems.
These agreements will build upon the century-long strategic partnership framework established in January. A joint press conference is expected to reveal further commitments to strengthening Ukraine’s air-defence network, enhancing anti-drone systems, and accelerating pilot training programmes aligned with NATO operational standards.
