Trump Cancels Kamala Harris’s Extended Secret Service Protection

President Donald Trump has formally revoked the Secret Service protection previously extended to former Vice President Kamala Harris by President Joe Biden. The directive, documented in a memorandum to the Department of Homeland Security, instructs that her security coverage will terminate effective September 1, 2025, restoring the post-office protection timeline to the six months prescribed by federal law.
Under existing law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office. Biden’s administration had quietly extended Harris’s coverage to one year through an executive memorandum, allowing protection until mid-2025. Trump’s order abolished that extension, ending Harris’s detail earlier than expected.
The news surfaced just ahead of Harris’s highly anticipated memoir book tour for "107 Days," released on September 23, which promises to elevate her public visibility. The termination of federal security has ignited concerns among officials and allies. California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass condemned the move as politically motivated and dangerous. Harris’s team has expressed gratitude toward the Secret Service for their professionalism and dedication during her time under protection.
This revocation continues a pattern of Trump rescinding federal safety measures for prominent figures associated with or supportive of his critics—including prior actions against Hunter and Ashley Biden, former National Security Advisor John Bolton, and other Biden administration holdovers. With her federal protection ended, Harris and her team must now seek alternative security arrangements through private means or local law enforcement support.
