Anvir Bashundhara Group (ABG) has launched a new initiative aimed at promoting sports in Bangladesh, encouraging young people to participate in athletics and developing a professional sports culture at the university level.
As part of the initiative, the inaugural ABG University Cup 2026 is scheduled to begin on October 25 at ABG Sports City. The tournament will feature cricket and football competitions under floodlights, with teams from 10 leading private universities in Bangladesh competing for the titles.
The logo of the ABG University Cup 2026 was recently unveiled by ABG Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir. The tournament is expected to create new opportunities for young athletes to showcase their talents and contribute to the development of sports in the country.
Cricket and Football Under Floodlights
The tournament will feature separate cricket and football competitions, with matches scheduled under floodlights at night. Teams representing the participating universities will compete for championship honours.
Sponsored by ABG Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir, the initiative is being viewed as part of broader efforts to improve sports infrastructure and provide young athletes with a high-quality sporting environment.
Following the international success of Bashundhara Kings and the development of the modern ABG Sports City, the university tournament is expected to further strengthen competitive sports at the campus level.
10 Private Universities to Participate
The participating institutions are American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), North South University, BRAC University, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), Sonargaon University, United International University (UIU), Fareast International University, University of Scholars and Daffodil International University.
Ahead of the tournament, a colourful ‘Captains’ Meet and Greet’ was held on Saturday night at the ABG chairman’s residence in Bashundhara Residential Area.
The event was attended by Imrul Hasan, director of ABG Sports City; Bidyut Kumar Bhowmik, adviser; Tasvir Ul Islam, executive director of T Sports; Operations Manager Salman Hasan; and Ikram Hossain Rafi.
Captains of the 20 cricket and football teams, along with students from the participating universities, also attended the gathering.
Tk 10 Lakh for Champions, Tk 5 Lakh for Runners-Up
To encourage young people to pursue sports in a competitive and professional environment, the organisers have announced prize money of Tk 10 lakh for the champions and Tk 5 lakh for the runners-up.
The prize pool has generated enthusiasm among participating students. Organisers and stakeholders expect the tournament to provide a platform for emerging athletes to demonstrate their abilities and potentially contribute to the development of future national-level players.
Captains attending the event said the opportunity to compete in a professional environment was a matter of pride. They expressed optimism that the initiative by ABG Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir would strengthen university sports culture and help nurture the next generation of sporting talent in Bangladesh.
