At Least 32 Killed After Crane Collapses Onto Train in Thailand; Safety Failures Under Scrutiny

A catastrophic accident in northeastern Thailand has claimed the lives of at least 32 people and left dozens more injured after a large construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train, causing it to derail and sparking a major emergency response.
The disaster occurred on Wednesday morning in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, when the crane — part of an elevated high-speed rail project — fell onto the Special Express Train No. 21, which was traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani.
The impact was swift and devastating. Carriages were crushed and thrown off the tracks, and some sections caught fire, trapping passengers inside.
Emergency crews worked under difficult conditions, using heavy equipment to remove mangled steel and concrete while searching for survivors and recovering victims. Hundreds of rescuers, medical personnel, and volunteers responded, transporting the injured to hospitals in the region.
Authorities reported that the death toll has risen as rescue operations continued into the afternoon, and at least three people remain missing amid the wreckage. Health officials confirmed 64 people were hospitalized, with several in serious condition, and additional moderate and minor injuries were recorded among the more than 190 passengers aboard the train.
The crane was being used in the construction of a China-backed high-speed rail corridor aimed at linking Bangkok with Kunming in China via Laos, a flagship infrastructure initiative under the broader Belt and Road framework.
Local engineering experts have pointed to potential safety lapses and procedural issues in how the massive “launching gantry” crane was being operated around an active rail line.
Some observers suggest that the collapse may have occurred during repositioning of the crane’s support structure — a complex maneuver requiring strict coordination — but the official investigation is ongoing.
The company responsible for the construction section, Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited, has expressed condolences and indicated it will provide compensation to affected families, as pressure mounts on contractors and regulators to address persistent safety concerns.
Critics note that this project, as well as others previously handled by the same firm, has been tied to serious construction accidents in recent years, prompting public demands for stronger enforcement of safety standards.
Thai authorities, including the Transport Minister and the Prime Minister, have vowed a full criminal and technical investigation to determine the exact causes and hold accountable those responsible. In the meantime, rail services on the affected line have been suspended, and nationwide safety checks on similar construction activities are expected.
The calamity has drawn international attention to the risks inherent in mega-infrastructure projects that intersect with existing transport networks and the critical importance of rigorous oversight.
