Gunman Kills Five in Bangkok Market Shooting Before Taking Own

A tragic mass shooting at Bangkok's Or Tor Kor Market on Monday left five people dead and two others injured. Thai police confirmed that the suspected gunman, a Thai national, later died by suicide at the scene.
The incident unfolded in the bustling market, renowned for its premium fresh produce and seafood. According to Police Lieutenant Siam Boonsom, the gunman had longstanding conflicts with the market’s security personnel. Four of the five victims were security guards, while the fifth was a market worker. Two other vendors were wounded during the attack.
Authorities have ruled out any connection between the shooting and Thailand’s ongoing border tensions with Cambodia.
Mass shootings are relatively rare in Thailand, though the country has witnessed a series of deadly incidents in recent years. In 2023, a 14-year-old boy opened fire in a high-end Bangkok shopping mall, killing two and injuring five. In 2022, a former police officer massacred at least 37 people—most of them young children—at a childcare centre in the northeastern province of Nong Bua Lamphu. The deadliest such event occurred in 2020, when a soldier killed 29 and injured dozens more in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Thailand has one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia, which has raised growing concerns about firearm regulation and public safety.
