A tragic mass shooting occurred on Monday evening in New York City when a lone gunman armed with an assault-style rifle stormed an office skyscraper located at 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including a serving police officer, Didarul Islam. The attacker, 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Nevada, ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to authorities, Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was the first to be fatally shot as he attempted to secure the lobby of the building. Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant, had served in the New York Police Department’s 47th Precinct in the Bronx for over three years. He leaves behind a wife who is currently pregnant and two young children. Officials lauded Islam’s bravery and sacrifice, with NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch emphasizing that “he died as he lived — a hero,” and New York City Mayor Eric Adams describing him as “a true-blue New Yorker... protecting lives.”
Following the initial shooting, Tamura continued his attack, opening fire in the lobby before ascending to the building’s 33rd floor, where he later took his own life. Three civilians—two men and one woman—were also killed in the assault. A fifth victim remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition. The identities of the civilian victims have not yet been released.
The building, which houses prominent organizations including the National Football League (NFL), Blackstone, and KPMG, was placed under lockdown for several hours as police conducted a meticulous floor-by-floor sweep. Witnesses described scenes of panic and confusion. Nearby shop worker Mama Bouhenni told the BBC she saw dozens of people being evacuated with their hands raised, calling the situation “terrifying.”
Community members in the Bronx gathered on Monday evening to honor Officer Islam. They remembered him as an active mentor in the local Bangladeshi community and a devout member of his mosque. Friends recounted how Islam had previously worked in school security before joining the NYPD in hopes of creating a lasting legacy for his family and community.
The suspected gunman, Shane Tamura, reportedly had a documented history of mental health issues. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack, but believe he acted alone. His cross-country journey from Las Vegas to New York remains a focus of the ongoing inquiry.
This tragic incident has renewed calls for stronger mental health interventions and further scrutiny of gun access in the United States. As the city mourns, tributes continue to pour in for Officer Islam, whose sacrifice is being hailed as an example of valor and duty.
