India Says It Will Purchase Oil Based on Best Price, Not Pressure

India’s ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, reaffirmed that Indian companies will continue to procure oil from sources offering the most competitive pricing, underscoring the nation’s priority of safeguarding its energy security for its population of 1.4 billion.
In an interview with Russia’s TASS agency, Kumar highlighted that energy purchases are determined by commercial considerations and national interest, not external pressure. He emphasized that New Delhi’s energy policy aims to ensure stable, affordable supplies for its citizens and noted that partnerships with Russia and other countries have played a role in stabilizing global oil markets.
Kumar also criticized the recent U.S. decision to impose punitive tariffs amounting to a total of 50% on Indian exports, linking them specifically to India’s imports of Russian oil. He described these measures as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”
India’s continued purchases of discounted Russian crude, currently making up a substantial portion of its imports, have drawn sharp criticism from the U.S., which alleges that the revenue supports Russia’s military activities in Ukraine. India has firmly rejected this accusation, insisting its actions reflect strategic autonomy and the imperative of affordable energy.
