Denmark summons US envoy over alleged Greenland influence plot

Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, has formally summoned the top American diplomat in Copenhagen following alarming reports that at least three U.S. citizens allegedly tied to former President Donald Trump were conducting covert influence operations in Greenland. These activities reportedly sought to sway local opinion and foster discord between Denmark and its semi-autonomous territory.
The allegations, first surfaced by Danish public broadcaster DR, indicate that one of the Americans compiled lists of Greenlanders who were either supportive of or critical toward Trump’s ambitions, while others engaged with politicians, business leaders, and residents across the island. The objective, according to security sources, appeared to be weakening Greenland’s ties with Denmark, potentially paving the way for increased U.S. involvement or influence.
Foreign Minister Rasmussen described such interference as “completely unacceptable” and emphasized that foreign attempts to meddle in Denmark’s internal affairs will not be tolerated. He confirmed that the U.S. chargé d’affaires, Mark Stroh, had been invited for discussions at the Danish Foreign Ministry.
Denmark’s domestic security and intelligence agency, PET, supported the broadcaster’s concern, warning that Greenland remains vulnerable to various influence campaigns, particularly those designed to exploit existing societal disagreements or amplify specific viewpoints towards the U.S. or other external actors.
The move comes amid a backdrop of renewed tension over Greenland, with Trump having previously expressed interest in acquiring the Arctic territory. Though Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly rejected such overtures, concerns over sovereignty and foreign interference now occupy the forefront of diplomatic discourse.
