On September 10, 2025, Poland forcefully rejected Russia’s claim that a drone incursion into its airspace was unintentional. The overnight incident saw at least 19 suspected Russian military drones enter Polish airspace, prompting a swift and coordinated defense response involving NATO allies.

Poland shot down multiple drones, some using Dutch F-35s, Polish F-16s, and other NATO aircraft, with debris landing deep inside Polish territory. Prime Minister Donald Tusk condemned the incursion as a “large-scale provocation” and warned it was the gravest threat to peace in Europe since World War II, though he stressed he did not believe it signaled imminent war.

He activated NATO’s Article 4 to trigger consultations with alliance partners. Despite the serious nature of the incident, no casualties were reported, though one drone did strike and damage a pensioner’s home in eastern Poland. Several Polish airports, including key hubs near Ukraine, were temporarily closed amid defensive operations.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte called the drone invasion “absolutely reckless,” affirming that the alliance remains vigilant and prepared to defend every inch of its territory. Russia, however, dismissed the allegations. A Kremlin spokesperson declined to comment directly and referred the matter to the Russian Defense Ministry, while its chargé d’affaires in Warsaw labeled the claims “groundless.”

In response to the attack, NATO leaders, including those from the U.S., Germany, and France, expressed solidarity with Poland. The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister and Defense Secretary condemned the violations as “unprecedented” and “extremely reckless,” respectively. UK Defense Secretary John Healey announced plans to explore ways that British military forces could bolster NATO air defenses over Poland, signaling a renewed focus on protecting eastern allies against aerial threats.

The incursion marks the first known instance of NATO forces firing on Russian drones within alliance airspace and underscores the increasing risks of escalating military engagement stemming from the Ukraine conflict.
