Torrential rains swept across Bali earlier this week, triggering flash floods and landslides that have left at least 14 people dead and two more missing. The disaster, labelled the worst flooding the island has experienced in a decade, has affected six of Bali’s eight regions, with Denpasar, the provincial capital, among the hardest hit.

Homes were submerged, and rivers overflowed their banks, tearing through communities and cutting off major roads, including key access routes to the island’s main international airport. More than 500 residents have been forced into emergency shelters located in schools and mosques. Landslides claimed many lives, while others were swept away by the rapidly rising waters.

Although rainfall has subsided and water levels are beginning to recede, the aftermath has left widespread damage in its wake. Nearly 500 military and rescue personnel have been deployed to clear debris, mud, and fallen trees from streets and restore accessibility. Power lines, communications, and other infrastructure in several villages were disrupted.

In neighboring East Nusa Tenggara province, heavy rain also sparked floods and landslides, claiming four additional lives. Authorities continue search and rescue operations across both provinces, while efforts shift to recovery and rebuilding.
