Chinese video-sharing platform Bilibili is preparing for a major expansion beyond its home market, aiming to attract international viewers and content creators. The company has launched an international version of its Android app and is also preparing an English-language website, putting it on a potential collision course with YouTube.

According to a Moneycontrol report, Bilibili has already launched a redesigned app for international users. The Android version is currently available, while an iOS version could be introduced soon.

The company has also simplified registration for users outside China. Previously, overseas users accessing Bilibili’s main platform were required to complete identity verification using documents such as passports or identification cards. The new international version removes that requirement, making it easier for users from different countries to join the platform.

Bilibili says its international and Chinese platforms will largely feature similar types of content. This could give overseas creators access to Bilibili’s huge Chinese audience while also bringing new content to international viewers.

The company is also working on an English-language website to make the platform more accessible globally. It has reportedly begun hiring employees in key markets, including the United States, Europe and Japan. Community manager positions have been opened in cities such as Los Angeles, London, Mexico City, São Paulo, Istanbul and Tokyo.

Beyond expanding its audience, Bilibili is looking to create new revenue opportunities for international creators. The company plans to develop a marketplace connecting content creators with brands, potentially opening up opportunities for sponsored content and other commercial collaborations.

Bilibili already has a massive user base in China, with around 376 million monthly active users on its domestic platform. The company is also seeking to attract internationally recognized creators, with personalities such as US-based creator MrBeast already known among users of its Chinese platform.

However, competing globally will not be easy. YouTube remains one of the world's dominant video platforms, giving Bilibili a major challenge as it attempts to establish itself in international markets.

The company may also face scrutiny over content moderation, censorship and data security because of its Chinese ownership. TikTok’s experience has demonstrated how Chinese-owned technology platforms can face additional regulatory and political pressure in Western countries.

Despite these challenges, Bilibili could become a significant player in the global online video market if it succeeds in attracting international creators by offering easier registration, access to a large Chinese audience and new monetization opportunities.
