Faridpur has gradually established itself as one of the major onion-producing regions in Bangladesh due to its fertile soil and favorable climate conditions. Over the past few years farmers in various upazilas of Faridpur including Saltha Bhanga and Nagarkanda have increasingly shifted their focus to onion cultivation encouraged by good yields and rising market demand. Onion farming in Faridpur now covers thousands of hectares contributing significantly to both local and national supply.
Farmers are using both traditional and modern techniques including irrigation fertilization and improved seed varieties to increase productivity. Many have also adopted early harvesting methods to meet off-season market demand and earn higher prices.
The Department of Agricultural Extension in Faridpur provides technical assistance training and regular monitoring which has led to notable growth in quality and quantity of onion production. Local markets such as Kanaipur Ambikapur and Faridpur Sadar have become active hubs for wholesale onion trade drawing traders from across the country. Farmers in Faridpur express optimism that if proper storage facilities and fair pricing are ensured the district can become one of the leading onion exporters in the future.
