Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid has said that livestock farming ahead of Eid-ul-Azha has become one of the biggest sources of annual income for marginal farmers and small-scale livestock rearers across the country.

He made the remarks on Tuesday while speaking to journalists after visiting the Neura cattle market in Cumilla Sadar South upazila. The minister said millions of families are benefiting financially from raising and selling sacrificial animals during Eid-ul-Azha. He noted that the sector is gradually transforming into an industry-based economic activity that is making a significant contribution to the national economy.

He said farmers from different regions of the country spend one to two years raising cattle, goats, sheep, and buffaloes for the Eid market, creating major economic opportunities for rural communities.

Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid added that the government is implementing various support programs, including training, technical assistance, and productivity enhancement initiatives, to strengthen marginal farmers and livestock rearers. These measures are helping expand commercial livestock farming and boost the country’s agriculture-based economy.

Responding to questions about security and management at cattle markets, the minister said authorities are maintaining strict monitoring through coordinated efforts by the administration, law enforcement agencies, and the Department of Livestock Services.

He also said veterinary medical teams have been deployed at every cattle market to conduct health checks, provide treatment, and ensure necessary medical support for animals. Livestock officials are also working in the field to assist traders and farmers.

The minister noted that no major complaints regarding extortion, insecurity, or market mismanagement have been reported so far. Measures have also been taken to prevent counterfeit currency transactions through fake note detection systems at various cattle markets.

He said monitoring activities would continue until the eve of Eid to ensure smooth and hassle-free trading for buyers and sellers.

Among others, Cumilla City Corporation Administrator Md. Yusuf Molla Tipu, District Livestock Officer, Md. Samsul Alam, Sadar South UNO, Sujan Chandra Roy and Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Mahe Alam were present during the visit.
