Watermelon cultivation in Bangladesh has seen significant growth in recent years as farmers across coastal and inland districts are turning to this high-demand fruit for profitable returns. Major watermelon-producing areas include Patuakhali Bhola Barishal Satkhira Khulna and parts of Rajshahi where sandy loam soil and favorable temperatures create ideal growing conditions. Cultivation usually begins in November to December and harvesting starts from March and continues till May. Farmers prefer hybrid varieties for better yield and quicker maturity using raised-bed techniques mulching and drip irrigation to enhance production and reduce disease risk. Many coastal farmers especially in the char areas are using land that was once fallow or underused during the dry season making watermelon a key crop for boosting seasonal income. Market demand for watermelon is strong during summer months when consumer consumption peaks due to high temperatures. Local markets and wholesale hubs see high volumes of trade while digital platforms are increasingly being used to reach urban buyers. Agricultural officials are providing training and support to improve farming practices post-harvest handling and disease control. Farmers report higher profits compared to traditional crops and express confidence that with proper marketing storage and transport support watermelon cultivation will continue to expand and contribute more to rural economic development in Bangladesh.
