Around 1,000 small holders in Joypurhat are being provided with agricultural input supports and training to undertake high value farming projects.
Some of them have successfully completed a few farming cycles with credit support, and others have been cultivating crops and rearing cattle under a nationwide programme initiated by WeGro, an agri-fintech platform.
More than 50 of those farmers and their close ones gathered in Akkelpur Upazila, Joypurhat, on Monday to reflect on the progress of their projects over the past two years. Around 130 farmers of Akkelpur have received support from WeGro.
“We’re happy to be part of this celebration as we’re committed to supporting the farmers to bring changes in their lives and livelihoods. We’re pledge-bound to contribute to transforming the country’s farm sector,” WeGro COO Faiyaz Safir told the farmers.
Apart from providing loans, the platform supports farmers with quality seeds, fertilizer, and pesticide, up-to-date technology, and digital knowledge to make agricultural production profitable and sustainable. It is working with over 12,000 farmers across more than 40 upazilas nationwide.
The platform has so far disbursed around $10.2 million as credit support and reimbursed $7.8 million, thanks to the successful operation of the programme.
WeGro’s Head of Business Development, Arif Rahman, mentioned that they aim to enable the farmers to emerge as a major driving force of the national economy.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Akkelpur, Monjurul Alam, addressing the programme as chief guest, expressed hope that WeGro would remain supportive of the farmers in their journey ahead.
WeGro was awarded the best startup innovation in Bangladesh Innovation Awards and the best innovation award in agriculture in 2023, and also won an Award as the winner in the Singapore Fintech Festival in 2024.
