Veteran politician and general secretary of the now-banned Awami League, Obaidul Quader, has been hospitalised in Kolkata, India, in critical condition following a sudden worsening of his health.
According to reliable sources, Quader had been suffering from multiple age-related illnesses and remained unwell for several days, receiving oxygen treatment at his home in New Town, Kolkata. Last Friday, his health deteriorated sharply, and in a near-unconscious state, he was rushed to a hospital near the bypass area of Kolkata.
Medical authorities at Apollo Hospital in Kolkata say Quader was immediately placed on ventilation support in intensive care. Although he has responded to treatment to some extent, his condition is still serious and precarious.
Sources confirmed that the sudden decline happened on 2 January and that he is currently under close medical supervision due to the severity of his illness.
Quader, a long-time political figure and influential leader, had reportedly faced health challenges for some time due to old-age complications prior to this recent crisis.
