DB: Underworld Figure ‘Dilip’ Ordered Mosabbir Killing

Police are probing the fatal shooting of a volunteer leader Md. Azizur Rahman Mosabbir in the Tejturi Bazar area of Dhaka, with detectives stating that the attack was ordered by an underworld figure known as Dilip alias Binas amid long-standing disputes over extortion and business control.
The investigation by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) suggests the violence stemmed from organized criminal interests rather than political rivalry.
Mosabbir, a leader associated with a local volunteer organization, was shot dead on the evening of January 7 near the Ahsanullah Institute of Technical and Vocational Education and Training.
In addition to Mosabbir, another leader, Suffian Bepari (alias Masud), was also shot and seriously injured in the same incident. The case was filed at Tejgaon Police Station following complaints from Mosabbir’s family, who named several unknown assailants.
During a press briefing, the DB Deputy Commissioner detailed that the motive behind the killing was extortion and control of local markets, particularly in areas like Karwan Bazar, where different groups have clashed over demands for protection money and claims on commercial zones. Investigators have been reviewing CCTV footage from the scene and have pursued suspects across multiple districts.
Authorities recently arrested one of the suspected shooters, Md. Rahim, in Narsingdi, where he was found in possession of two foreign-made pistols, magazines, and ammunition.
Earlier, other suspects, including Billal and Abdul Kader, believed to have played key roles in planning the murder, were also apprehended. In court proceedings, another suspect, Jinnat, has given a confession under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code, admitting involvement in the killing.
Police officials affirmed that although the group involved in the shooting has connections with criminal networks in the city, there are no indications that Mosabbir’s political activities were the reason for the attack. The crackdown continues, with law enforcement seizing weapons and intensifying efforts to dismantle extortion syndicates suspected of destabilizing public safety.
