The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) in Bangladesh has handed death sentences to three former senior police officials, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, for their role in the killing of six people in the Chankharpul area of Dhaka during the July 2024 mass uprising.

The tribunal delivered the historic verdict on Monday, 26 January 2026, after concluding that the accused committed crimes against humanity in connection with the brutal deaths.

The three death-sentenced individuals are Habibur Rahman, former DMP Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, and Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam, who served as Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna zone at the time of the incident. In addition to the death penalties, the tribunal ordered confiscation of the convicted individuals’ assets as part of the judgment.

The tribunal also passed prison sentences against several other accused in the case. Former Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Imrul was sentenced to six years in prison, while former Inspector Md Arshad Hossain received a four-year sentence. Constables Md Sujon Hossain, Imaj Hossain Emon, and Md Nasirul Islam were each handed three-year prison terms.

The incident in question occurred on 5 August 2024, when six individuals were killed in the Chankharpul area during a period of intense unrest connected to the July uprising.

The tribunal’s ruling marks a significant development in one of the high-profile crimes against humanity cases linked to that period. The verdict was delivered by a three-member bench of the ICT-1, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, with Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury also part of the panel.
