In a bold and organised theft early Monday morning, a large quantity of gold and silver was stolen from a jewellery shop in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area. The incident took place at New Rana Jewellers in Chandrima Market during the pre-dawn hours.
According to the shop owner, Masud Rana, he had closed the store around 11:00 PM on Sunday and returned home. When he arrived to open the shop at around 10:00 AM on Monday, he found the collapsible gate and shutter locks broken and the interior vandalised.
The thieves had managed to force their way inside, taking away a large chest containing precious metals. Police and preliminary reports confirmed that approximately 70 bhori of gold and 600 bhori of silver were stolen, along with cash amounting to Tk 4 lakh and important gold purchase receipts.
Footage from the shop’s CCTV cameras shows a group of around six to eight individuals entering the store at about 3:20 AM, after breaking the shutter and gate. Most of the suspects were seen wearing caps, face masks, and hoodies, and they quickly collected jewellery boxes before fleeing the scene. The stolen gold included both the owner’s personal stock and items kept as collateral.
Police from Mohammadpur Police Station have confirmed the theft is under active investigation. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting operations in an effort to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, and hopefully recover the stolen items.
Local residents and business owners have expressed concern at the brazen nature of the crime, pointing to broader security challenges in the area at night. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward as part of the ongoing probe.
