Draft Indemnity Ordinance Prepared to Provide Legal Protection for ‘July Fighters’, Says Law Adviser

Bangladesh’s Law Ministry has prepared a draft “Indemnity Ordinance” aimed at granting legal immunity and protection to individuals described as “July fighters” who took part in the July mass uprising.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul disclosed the development in a post from his verified Facebook page on Thursday, saying the draft would be placed at the next meeting of the Council of Advisers for approval.
In his statement, he argued that those who participated in the July uprising acted in resistance against violence during that period and therefore deserve legal protection. He also cited constitutional and historical precedent, referencing Article 46 of the Constitution and noting that indemnity legislation was enacted in 1973 following the Liberation War.
Media reports said the move follows a decision taken earlier this week at a law-and-order related meeting of the advisory council, where the Law Ministry was asked to prepare a draft ordinance to ensure indemnity and legal safeguards for the July uprising participants.
