Important Street in Michigan Renamed ‘Khaleda Zia Street’ in United States

In the U.S. state of Michigan, a street in the city of Hamtramck has been officially renamed in honor of the late Begum Khaleda Zia, the three-time former prime minister of Bangladesh and former chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The central Carpenter Street — a key thoroughfare in the city — will now be known as Khaleda Zia Street following approval by the Hamtramck City Council.
Local authorities in Hamtramck formalized the name change for the section of road between Joseph Campau and Conant Street, marking a symbolic recognition of Khaleda Zia’s leadership and political legacy.
Members of the city council, including several councilors of Bangladeshi descent, supported the proposal and helped secure its passage.

Bangladeshi expatriates and community leaders welcomed the decision, describing it as a meaningful tribute to Zia’s contributions and an enduring reminder of Bangladesh’s political history within the diaspora community.
They noted that having a street named after a prominent Bangladeshi leader in the United States may also inspire younger generations to learn more about their heritage and civic leadership.
This is not the first instance of a U.S. street honoring a Bangladeshi political figure; previously, a street in Chicago was named after the country’s late President Ziaur Rahman.
With this latest honor, Khaleda Zia’s name becomes part of the American urban landscape, reflecting cultural ties between Bangladesh and its overseas communities.
