The founder of e-commerce platform Evaly, Mohammad Rassel, and his wife and company chairperson, Shamima Nasrin, have been arrested again in Bangladesh, according to law enforcement officials.

Police said the arrests were made in connection with new cases filed over alleged financial fraud and misappropriation of customer funds. The couple had earlier been released on bail in previous cases, but fresh complaints led authorities to detain them once more for questioning.

Evaly rose rapidly as one of Bangladesh’s most prominent e-commerce platforms by offering heavy discounts and advance-payment schemes. However, the company later came under investigation after thousands of customers alleged they paid for products that were never delivered. Regulatory agencies and courts subsequently intervened, freezing accounts and imposing operational restrictions on the company.

Officials said the latest arrests relate to ongoing investigations into Evaly’s business practices, including allegations of cheating, breach of trust, and money laundering. The accused were produced before a court, which ordered them into custody for further investigation.

Lawyers representing Russell and Shamima have previously denied wrongdoing, arguing that Evaly’s failure was the result of business mismanagement rather than criminal intent. Authorities, however, maintain that repeated arrests are necessary as new evidence and complaints continue to surface.

The case has become one of the most high-profile examples of alleged e-commerce fraud in Bangladesh, sparking wider debate over consumer protection, digital commerce regulation, and accountability of online platforms.
