BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has raised serious questions about the government’s apparent inaction in the brutal killing of Lal Chand, alias Sohag, suggesting that mob violence may be receiving silent support from elements within the administration. “Should we assume that those trying to create mob violence and unrest are being secretly supported or pampered by the government or some officials in the administration?” Tarique asked during a virtual meeting with families of the 142 martyrs of the July mass uprising. The incident in question occurred on Wednesday, when 39-year-old Sohag was forcibly dragged out of his shop in Old Dhaka and beaten to death in broad daylight near the gate of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital. Eyewitnesses reported that large chunks of concrete were used to crush his body, which was later left on the street while onlookers watched in shock. Despite the availability of video evidence, authorities have not yet arrested the perpetrators, prompting widespread concern and criticism. Tarique condemned the lack of action. “A wrongdoer is a wrongdoer. Justice must be served according to the law, irrespective of his or her political identity,” he said. “People across the country are asking
why the government remains silent while chaos spreads.” The BNP leader emphasized that the party and its affiliates have consistently spoken out against such violence, warning of increasing attempts to destabilize the environment through mob tactics. The event was organized by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at a Dhaka hotel to commemorate the first anniversary of the July–August mass uprising and to honour the memory of Chhatra Dal members who died during that period. Families of the deceased demanded justice and expressed frustration over the slow pace of trials. Tarique called on them to continue pressing for
accountability and to stay vigilant against further attempts to use mobs to obstruct justice. “If BNP forms the government with the people’s support, we will prioritise ensuring justice for those who lost their lives defending democracy,” he assured.
