Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated a large-scale tree plantation campaign in Gournadi, Barishal, by planting coconut and neem saplings, emphasizing that the success of such initiatives depends not only on planting trees but also on their proper care and maintenance.
The program was launched on Monday (13 July) along the bank of the newly excavated Sarikal–Batajor Canal in Batajor Union, where the Prime Minister arrived at around 10:00 a.m.
The canal, locally known as the Batajor Canal, flows past Batajor Bazar before connecting with the Sarikal River and eventually the Miyarchar River.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan accompanied the Prime Minister during the event and also planted a sapling as part of the campaign.
Residents gathered along the canal warmly welcomed the Prime Minister, who acknowledged them by waving from the plantation site.
Launching the campaign under the slogan "Bangladesh First," Tarique Rahman said, "Planting trees is only the beginning. Around 2,500 saplings will be planted today, and every one of them must be properly cared for."
He added, "Just as a newborn child requires daily care and attention, every sapling also needs regular nurturing to grow into a healthy tree."
Following the tree plantation program, the Prime Minister attended a Family Card distribution ceremony in Batajor, where he handed over cards to women heading beneficiary families.
After completing his engagements in Gournadi, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman departed for Barishal city by road.
