Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the people of Bangladesh entrusted his government with the responsibility of safeguarding their interests, and that guiding principle shaped his discussions during his official visits to Malaysia and China.

Addressing parliament on Saturday after lawmakers unanimously adopted a motion of thanks for the success of his recent overseas tour, the prime minister said the visit was focused entirely on advancing Bangladesh's national interests.

"There was nothing personal about this visit. If any meaningful achievements have been made, they belong to Bangladesh and its people," he told the House.

The remarks came during the 16th sitting of the second session (Budget Session) of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram. Rahman completed his first six-day official visit to Malaysia and China from June 21 to 26.

Parliament formally congratulated the prime minister on the successful state visits, while Rahman thanked lawmakers for their support. He said his party's guiding principle, "Bangladesh First," reflects its commitment to placing the country's interests above all else.

The prime minister also thanked members from both the treasury and opposition benches, with special appreciation for the Leader of the Opposition, saying the opposition had encouraged efforts aimed at serving the people of Bangladesh.

Earlier, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir moved the motion of thanks, which was later passed by voice vote following detailed discussions.

During the debate, lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition parties described the Malaysia-China tour as a landmark in Bangladesh's foreign policy and economic diplomacy. Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman highlighted the strategic significance of the prime minister's engagements.

Before the vote, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram said the discussions clearly indicated that the prime minister's recent visits to Malaysia and China had opened a new chapter in Bangladesh's foreign policy.
