Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice-President Sadik Kayem has criticised the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), alleging that the party’s political activities over the past two years have left the public increasingly frustrated.

Kayem made the remarks in a Facebook post on Wednesday, October 28. He accused some BNP leaders and activists of involvement in various crimes and questioned the party leadership’s response to allegations of violence and criminal activity.

Raises Questions Over Sohag and Shakil Islam Cases
In his post, Kayem referred to incidents of violence following the July uprising, including the death of Sohag in the Mitford stone-attack incident. He also raised concerns over the killing of Shakil Islam, member-secretary of Natore municipal Chhatra Dal.

Kayem alleged that Shakil was killed following a dispute involving the two sons of a BNP member of parliament. He also questioned what he described as the silence of the central Chhatra Dal leadership and the BNP over the incident.

According to Kayem, when political interests take precedence over speaking out against alleged wrongdoing, the resulting politics of power and retaliation can have damaging consequences for the country.

Allegations Against Party Members
Kayem further alleged that some BNP leaders and activists had become involved in extortion, violence, murder, rape and other offences. He questioned whether disciplinary measures, including expulsion from the party, were sufficient responses to serious allegations of criminal conduct.

He argued that the growing influence of retaliatory politics could leave ordinary citizens and even members of political organisations vulnerable to violence.

These statements represent Kayem’s allegations; the claims require independent verification, and responses from the individuals and organisations concerned are important for a complete account.

Calls on BNP to End Violence
Concluding his post, Kayem urged the BNP to abandon violent political practices and stop providing protection to individuals accused of criminal activities.

He warned that failure to address these issues could lead to public rejection of the party’s political approach.

His comments add to the ongoing political debate over violence, accountability and the responsibilities of political organisations in Bangladesh.
