Two Interim Government Advisers Step Down Ahead of Election Schedule

Two members of Bangladesh’s interim government, Mahfuj Alam and Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, resigned from their posts on Wednesday, submitting their letters at the State Guest House Jamuna ahead of the forthcoming announcement of the national election schedule.
Both advisers tendered their resignations by late afternoon, and the Chief Adviser’s office confirmed that their departures will take effect once the Election Commission unveils the election timetable. The move is seen as a step to avoid any conflict of interest as political activities intensify ahead of the polls.
Asif Mahmud, who oversaw Local Government, Rural Development, Cooperatives, Youth and Sports, stated in his resignation letter that serving in the interim advisory council was a “proud experience.”
He said he fulfilled his duties with sincerity and emphasised that continuing in office while intending to contest in the upcoming election would not be ethically appropriate.
Mahfuj Alam, who had been serving as the Information and Broadcasting Adviser, was among the younger leaders appointed during the transitional phase following last year’s political changes.
His departure marks another shift within the advisory council as it undergoes restructuring before the electoral process formally begins.
The Chief Adviser acknowledged the contributions of both advisers and extended best wishes for their future roles. Their resignations reduce the size of the advisory council and signal a continuing effort to maintain neutrality in the lead-up to the 13th national parliamentary election.
