Who Is Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s New Supreme Leader?

Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, aged 56, has been named the new Supreme Leader of Iran, following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, earlier this month.
The Assembly of Experts, an 88‑member clerical body responsible for selecting Iran’s supreme leader, officially appointed him on 8 March 2026 after Iran’s longtime leader was killed in joint U.S.–Israeli airstrikes.
Born on 8 September 1969 in Mashhad, Mojtaba is the second son of the late Supreme Leader and comes from a prominent clerical family. He studied Islamic theology at the Qom Seminary and has served as a cleric for many years. He also has deep connections with Iran’s military‑religious establishment, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), where he held influential behind‑the‑scenes roles linked to political and security affairs under his father’s leadership.
Before his appointment as supreme leader, Mojtaba was Deputy Chief of Staff to the Supreme Leader for Political and Security Affairs, and played an important role in Iran’s clerical and military circles. Although not widely known to the public before the leadership transition, he long wielded influence within Iran’s elite. His rise marks a rare dynastic succession in a system not formally designed for hereditary leadership, and has drawn both domestic and international attention.
Mojtaba’s appointment comes amid ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel, which has shaped Iran’s political landscape following the war’s outbreak in late February 2026. Observers note that his ties to hard‑line elements could signify continuity or even intensification of Iran’s foreign policy stance.
Despite reports that Mojtaba may have been injured during the airstrikes that killed his father, Iranian officials have described him as safe and sound in a secure location. He has largely stayed out of public view since assuming leadership, prompting speculation about his role and visibility during this turbulent period.
