At least 51 schoolgirls have been killed in an air strike on an elementary school in southern Iran, according to local authorities, as tensions escalate amid increased military action involving the United States and Israel.

The attack took place on Saturday morning at Shajareh Tayyebeh School in Minab city, located in Hormozgan province. Iranian state media reported that the victims were between the ages of seven and 12.

According to Iran’s Tasnim and Fars news agencies, the strike hit the girls’ primary school while classes were in session. There were approximately 170 female students inside the building at the time of the attack.

The county governor said that 51 students had been confirmed dead and at least 60 others were wounded. Earlier reports indicated that at least 45 people were injured, though casualty figures may rise as rescue operations continue.

The air strike caused significant structural damage to the school, trapping many students beneath the rubble. Emergency teams were dispatched to the scene to search for survivors and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

Officials described the incident as a missile attack attributed to Israel. The strike comes amid heightened hostilities in the region, with both the United States and Israel reportedly intensifying operations involving Iran.

Authorities have not yet released further details about the circumstances surrounding the attack. Rescue efforts remain ongoing.
