Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Marks 20th Year of Imprisonment
Published : 19:25, 7 March 2026
Today marks the 20th year since Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s imprisonment, which occurred on March 6, 2007, when he was arrested by the then military-backed caretaker government.
On this day, Rahman was detained in connection with multiple cases, and was placed under remand following his arrest. He spent nearly 18 months in jail, during which time the political climate in Bangladesh was highly charged. Eventually, on September 3, 2008, he was granted bail and subsequently traveled to the United Kingdom for medical treatment.
The One-Eleven government had framed numerous cases against Rahman, and later, the current government under the Awami League continued legal action against him, with over a hundred cases filed across the country. However, Rahman received justice through the courts and was acquitted in most of the cases.
The BNP leadership claims that all the cases against Tarique Rahman were politically motivated, aimed at weakening the opposition and silencing political dissent. Despite the challenges, Rahman has managed to maintain his leadership of the party and remains a key figure in the political future of BNP.
To mark this day, various BNP wings have organized milad and mahfil (prayers and gatherings) in memory of the political struggle Rahman endured.
