The government has proposed an allocation of Tk 42,291 crore for the defense sector in the national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, marking an increase of Tk 1,593 crore compared with the revised allocation for the outgoing fiscal year.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the proposed allocation while presenting the national budget in Parliament on Thursday. The overall budget for FY 2026-27 has been set at Tk 938,000 crore.

According to the budget proposal, Tk 38,721 crore has been allocated for the operational expenditure of defense services, while Tk 1,611 crore has been earmarked for development expenditure.

In addition, Tk 1,915 crore has been proposed for the operational expenses of other services under the Ministry of Defense. A further Tk 44 crore has been allocated for the operational expenditure of the Armed Forces Division.

The revised defense allocation for the 2025-26 fiscal year stood at Tk 40,502 crore. The proposed budget therefore reflects a notable increase in defense spending for the upcoming fiscal year.

The budget was presented during a parliamentary session chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and attended by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The FY 2026-27 budget is the 55th national budget of Bangladesh and the first budget presented by Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury as finance minister under the current government.
