Two Arrested Over Theft of Prime Minister’s Office Red Telephone Cable
The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested two individuals in connection with the theft of the red telephone cable linked to the Prime Minister’s Office located within the Secretariat.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Ranjan Chandra, 25, and Rezakul Islam, 32. Police also recovered the stolen copper wire during the operation.
The incident, involving the theft of a sensitive communication cable connected to the Prime Minister’s Office, recently drew significant attention on social media and in national media outlets. Following the incident, Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) filed a case against unidentified persons with Shahbagh Police Station.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, CTTC’s City Intelligence Analysis Division launched an investigation. Based on intelligence findings and information from confidential sources, authorities detained Secretariat outsourcing employee Ranjan Chandra for questioning on Thursday afternoon.
During interrogation, Ranjan reportedly confessed to stealing the cable from Building No. 3 of the Secretariat on May 22. He further stated that on June 1, he sold approximately 8.2 kilograms of copper wire to a scrap dealer in front of Dhaka University’s Ekushey Hall at a rate of Tk 600 per kilogram.
Acting on his information, CTTC officers conducted a raid and arrested scrap trader Rezakul Islam from the Ekushey Hall area. Later, based on information provided by the suspect, investigators recovered the stolen copper wire from a scrap warehouse located on Hossaini Dalan Road under Chawkbazar Police Station.
According to preliminary findings, CTTC suspects that an organized group may be involved in the theft of various important communication cables within the Secretariat. Efforts are ongoing to identify and bring the masterminds behind the network to justice.
Responding to questions from journalists, the DMP Commissioner said law enforcement agencies remain firm against any criminal activity that could compromise the security of key state installations. Operations to identify and arrest other individuals involved in the incident are continuing.
