Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kajol has announced that he will personally lead the state’s legal team in the death reference hearing of the widely discussed Ramisa rape and murder case, scheduled to begin on Sunday.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday (June 11), the Attorney General said the prosecution would not seek any adjournment in the case and that proceedings in Ramisa’s case, along with other significant rape and murder cases involving women and children, would continue without interruption.

On Wednesday, the Chief Justice formed a special High Court bench to hear death references and appeals related to cases of violence against women and children. The bench, comprising Justice Bhishmadeb Chakraborty and Justice K.M. Rasheduzzaman Raja, is set to commence hearings from Sunday.

A special prosecution team has been formed under the leadership of the Attorney General. The team includes Deputy Attorney General Barrister Osman Chowdhury, Deputy Attorney General Barrister Mehedi Hasan, Deputy Attorney General Jamiul Haque Faisal, and Assistant Attorney General Dewan Humayun Kabir Ripon.

On June 9, the death reference documents related to the death sentences awarded to Sohail Rana and Swapna Akter for the rape and murder of eight-year-old Ramisa in Pallabi, Dhaka, were submitted to the High Court.

The documents were forwarded after Judge Masrur Saleqin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Children Violence Suppression Tribunal signed the verdict sentencing the two convicts to death.

Under Bangladeshi law, any death sentence awarded by a trial court must be reviewed and approved by the High Court before it can be carried out. This mandatory judicial review process is known as a death reference.

The prosecution has expressed confidence that the hearing process will proceed swiftly and contribute to ensuring justice in the case.
