The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has revoked the license of Ad-din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar, Dhaka, following the controversial deaths of six newborns and an unsatisfactory response to a show-cause notice issued to the hospital authorities.

The decision was announced on Thursday (June 11) by DGHS Director General Professor Dr. Provat Chandra Biswas during a press briefing.

According to health officials, the explanation submitted by the hospital regarding the deaths of the six infants failed to address the concerns raised by the authorities, prompting regulatory action against the institution.

Earlier, Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain had expressed dissatisfaction with the hospital’s explanation and warned that legal action would be taken if the response was found inadequate.

The incident occurred on May 27, when six newborns died within a three-hour period between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. at the Moghbazar-based hospital. The deaths sparked widespread public concern and led the government to launch an official investigation.

Subsequently, hospital owner Sheikh Mohiuddin was served with a show-cause notice asking why the hospital’s license should not be cancelled. The authorities had set a deadline of June 7 for submitting a formal explanation.

Following a review of the response and findings from the investigation process, health authorities concluded that the hospital had failed to provide a satisfactory justification regarding the incident.

Officials said additional legal and administrative measures may be pursued based on the outcome of the ongoing investigation. Authorities also emphasized that efforts to determine the exact causes of the newborn deaths and identify any responsible individuals or institutional failures will continue.

The decision marks one of the most significant regulatory actions taken against a private healthcare institution in recent years, reflecting heightened scrutiny over patient safety and accountability in the health sector.
