Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called on the media to play a greater role in fostering human values and helping build a compassionate and responsible society.

The appeal came during an exchange meeting with executives and news heads of electronic media outlets, held on Monday afternoon at the Public Administration Conference Room of the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat. The discussion took place from 1:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibly said the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of media cooperation in nation-building and social development. According to him, the Prime Minister believes public discourse should not revolve solely around politics but should also focus on humanity, social responsibility, and ethical values.

The Press Secretary said the Prime Minister highlighted a growing tendency in society where people often record incidents of violence or abuse instead of intervening to help victims. He stressed the need to revive compassion, empathy, and civic responsibility among citizens and noted that the media can play a key role in this effort.

Saleh Shibly also said the Prime Minister listened to the views of media representatives and expressed his willingness to maintain regular communication and dialogue with the media in the future.

Executives and news editors from several television channels participated in the discussion and shared their perspectives. Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon and Press Secretary Saleh Shibly also addressed the gathering.

Among those present were State Minister for Information Yasser Khan Chowdhury, Prime Minister’s advisers Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman and Mahdi Amin, speechwriter S. A. M. Mahfuzur Rahman, Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman, and other senior officials.

The Prime Minister later hosted a luncheon for the participating media executives.
