The government has made it mandatory for all public transport vehicles across Bangladesh to install and maintain operational GPS (Global Positioning System) devices from August 1. The decision follows a notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges on June 11. Subsequently, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) released a public notice on Monday (June 15)
According to BRTA, the initiative aims to enhance road safety and improve transport management through the integration of modern information technology into the public transportation system. Under the new directive, all public transport vehicles must be equipped with approved GPS devices and ensure that they remain functional at all times.
BRTA also stated that the technical specifications for the GPS devices can be obtained from its local offices or downloaded from the authority’s official website.
In line with Section 25 of the Road Transport Act, 2018, and Rule 55 of the Road Transport Rules, 2022, vehicle registration and fitness certificate renewals will only be processed after verifying that the required GPS device has been installed. BRTA has called on transport owners and all concerned stakeholders to cooperate in implementing the directive.
