Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that as head of government, he relies most on the trust and support of the people, and therefore security measures should not create a barrier between public leaders and citizens.
He made the remarks on Thursday (June 18) while addressing a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the Special Security Force (SSF) at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon.
Addressing SSF personnel, the Prime Minister said that while protecting key state figures remains the force’s primary responsibility, members must also ensure that ordinary citizens are not subjected to inconvenience or inappropriate treatment during security operations.
He noted that today’s security environment is significantly more complex than when the force was established, citing rapid technological developments, geopolitical changes, and evolving security threats. He emphasized the need for continuous training, modernization, and preparedness to meet these challenges.
The Prime Minister highlighted the historical evolution of the force and extended his greetings to both current and former SSF members on the occasion of its anniversary.
Praising the force’s contributions, he said SSF had played an important role in ensuring security during various state responsibilities, including the medical treatment period and funeral arrangements of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
Referring to his own security arrangements, Tarique Rahman said he had reduced the size of his motorcade to minimize public inconvenience on roads. As a result, greater emphasis is now being placed on efficiency, coordination, and advanced security strategies rather than increasing personnel numbers.
He also noted that maintaining security at large public gatherings and state events across the country remains a significant challenge. According to him, SSF must carefully balance the protection of the head of government with the public’s freedom of movement and convenience.
Speaking about the newly constructed modern firing range for the force, the Prime Minister said it would help improve professional skills and strengthen training capabilities.
He urged SSF members to uphold professionalism, integrity, loyalty, and strict adherence to the chain of command. He also stressed the importance of coordination with law enforcement agencies, intelligence organizations, and relevant government institutions to strengthen national security.
The Prime Minister assured that the government would continue taking necessary steps to enhance the force’s capabilities and ensure it remains aligned with modern security standards and technological advancements.
Cabinet members, chiefs of the armed forces, senior SSF officials, and members of the force attended the event.
