Newspapers Are the Mirror of Society: Fisheries and Livestock State Minister

Newspapers serve as a mirror of a country and play an important role in highlighting social shortcomings while guiding people toward a disciplined and orderly society, Fisheries and Livestock State Minister and Tangail-1 constituency lawmaker Sultan Salahuddin Tuku has said.

He also called on professional journalists to play a responsible role in preventing unethical and irresponsible journalism.

The minister made the remarks on Friday afternoon while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural and publication ceremony of the weekly ‘Somoy Taranga’ at the Tangail Press Club.

Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said journalists have a responsibility to highlight various problems and irregularities in society through accurate and responsible reporting. Newspapers can also play an important role in guiding people toward the right path and contributing to the development of an orderly society, he said.

He stressed the need to prevent malpractice in journalism and urged professional journalists to uphold ethical standards and protect the credibility of the media.

Speaking about media freedom, the state minister said, “We will never obstruct the democratic process. We will not interfere with anyone's freedom. We will provide the highest possible support to journalists.”

He added that journalists themselves should choose their leaders, while the government's responsibility is to create an environment in which journalists can work freely.

Calling for unity to accelerate the development of Tangail, Tuku said the district is a large, prosperous and historically significant region with many achievements to be proud of.

“To move Tangail forward, a collective effort by people from all professions and sections of society is essential,” he said.

The event was chaired by Md. Rowshan Ali, editor and publisher of the weekly ‘Somoy Taranga’.

Among the special guests were Hasanuzzamil Shaheen, president of Tangail district BNP; Mahmudul Haque Sanu, former member secretary of the district BNP; Azgar Ali, president of Sadar upazila BNP; and Kazi Zakerul Mowla, general secretary of the Tangail Press Club.

Prominent figures from the local political, social and journalistic communities were also present at the event.
