The BNP has collected two nomination papers from the Election Commission’s Returning Officer’s office for the upcoming presidential election.

Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nurul Islam and BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi collected the nomination papers from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer at the Election Building in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Sunday (August 9).

The Election Commission announced the presidential election schedule last Thursday. According to the schedule, voting will take place on August 20, while nomination papers must be submitted by August 13.

The scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on August 16, and candidates will have until 4pm on August 18 to withdraw their nominations.

Nomination papers can be submitted on August 13 between 10am and 4pm at the Returning Officer’s office. The scrutiny will begin at 10am on August 16 at the Election Commission building.

Voting will be held from 2pm to 5pm on August 20 in the session room of the Jatiya Sangsad.

Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin will serve as the Returning Officer for the presidential election.

Under the law, the Election Commission must arrange a new presidential election within 90 days of the resignation of a president. Until a new president is elected, the Speaker will perform the functions of the president in accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws.

Former President Md Shahabuddin, the country’s 22nd president, resigned on July 24. Following his resignation, the Election Commission began preparations for the 23rd presidential election.

As part of the preparations, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has already held a meeting with Acting Speaker Kaiser Kamal.
