Online news portal Nagorik Protidin, owned by Meghna Group, has announced the closure of its operations. Employees were informed that the media outlet would cease operations from Monday, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The decision was communicated through a letter sent to staff members. However, the letter did not specify the reasons behind the closure.

Sources said the notice also did not provide details regarding the payment of outstanding salaries, benefits, or other dues. No official statement from the ownership has yet been made available regarding the matter.

Commenting on the development, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) President Shahidul Islam said the union became aware of the issue and has been in contact with the management. According to him, the management has assured that all outstanding salaries and termination benefits will be paid within one week. The union will continue its efforts to ensure that journalists receive their legitimate dues.

DUJ Joint General Secretary Didarul Alam Didar said the organisation works to protect the rights of media professionals whenever those rights are affected. He noted that discussions would be held with the management to ensure that employees receive all payments and benefits in accordance with labour laws. Further action may be considered if necessary.

Nagorik Protidin was among several media outlets that reportedly received investment from Meghna Group after July 2024. The outlet had continued its operations following that investment.

However, Meghna Group has not yet publicly disclosed the specific reasons behind the decision to discontinue the operations of Nagorik Protidin.
