BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid tribute at the graves of the party’s founder, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, and former chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on the occasion of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s 48th founding anniversary.

Tarique Rahman placed floral wreaths at the graves at around 9am on Tuesday (September 1). Cabinet members and senior BNP leaders were present at the time.

Founded on September 1, 1978, the BNP has turned 48 and is celebrating its founding anniversary in a new political reality after returning to state power following nearly two decades.

This is also the first BNP anniversary since party chairman Tarique Rahman assumed office as Prime Minister, adding further significance to this year’s celebrations.

The BNP secured an absolute majority in the national parliamentary election held on February 12 this year. Tarique Rahman took oath as Prime Minister on February 17, marking the party’s return to power after a prolonged period.

For the BNP, this year’s anniversary is not merely a formal political event. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate the party’s ability to implement its political commitments after years of opposition politics.

The 48th anniversary is therefore being observed amid both the enthusiasm of returning to power after a long political struggle and the major responsibility of governing the country and meeting public expectations.
