Journalist Sohel Mahmud to Receive ‘Greenman Award-26’ for 23 Years of Professional Service

Gazi Television (GTV) News Editor and Dhaka Reporters Unity’s Information Technology and Training Secretary Md. Mahmudur Rahman, popularly known as Sohel Mahmud, is set to receive the ‘Greenman Award-26’ in recognition of his contribution to raising public awareness about environmental protection through journalism.

The award will be presented to him at a ceremony scheduled to be held at the National Press Club in Dhaka on September 2.

The award has been announced by environmental organization Sabuj Andolon as part of its anniversary programme. This year, three organizations and four distinguished individuals have been selected for the Greenman Award-26. Sohel Mahmud has been selected in the individual category for his contribution to creating public awareness through journalism.

Sohel Mahmud began his journalism career nearly 23 years ago as a campus reporter at the University of Dhaka. Over the course of his career, he has worked across almost every major media platform, including radio, television, newspapers, online news and digital media.

He has served as a senior reporter at Diganta Television, SATV, ATN News and Ajker Patrika. He also worked as Online In-Charge at Desh TV and headed the digital department of GTV. Earlier, he served as a Special Correspondent at GTV. He is currently serving as the News Editor of the television channel.

According to his colleagues, Sohel Mahmud is not only an experienced journalist but also a responsible organizer and professional leader. His commitment to his responsibilities, professional discipline, and cooperative approach toward colleagues have earned him recognition within the media community.

His professional journey, however, has not been without challenges. He has faced various forms of professional pressure and legal complications during his career, particularly in connection with investigative and corruption-related reporting. Despite such challenges, he has continued to emphasize professional ethics, accuracy, and objective journalism.

He also went through a difficult period after Diganta Television ceased operations. During that time, unemployment and family responsibilities created additional challenges for him, including caring for his ailing mother. Although he later returned to professional life, his mother passed away before he could bring her back to live with him.

Despite these personal and professional challenges, Sohel Mahmud continued his career in journalism and remained committed to his professional responsibilities. Receiving the Greenman Award-26 alongside his new professional responsibility marks another significant recognition in his long career.

The award ceremony and discussion programme will be held at 10:00 am on September 2 at the Zahir Hossain Chowdhury Auditorium on the second floor of the National Press Club in Dhaka.

A discussion titled “Measures to Ensure the Use of Renewable Energy to Address Power Shortages” will also be held as part of the programme.

Professor Dr. Md. Kamrul Ahsan, Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, is expected to attend the event as the chief guest.

Among the invited expert speakers are economist Dr. Khandaker Golam Moazzem, environmentalist Dr. Ahmed Kamruzzaman Majumder, economist Dr. Mahfuz Kabir, urban planner Mehdi Ahsan, Dr. Adil Muhammad Khan and Dr. Farhadur Reza, along with other distinguished guests.
