Former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor and former vice-president of the district Awami League, Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy, chanted “Joy Bangla” after appearing in court in a murder case on Tuesday, October 13.
Ivy appeared before Judge Abu Shamim Azad at the Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Court on Tuesday morning.
After the hearing, as she was getting into her car amid a gathering of supporters, Ivy said, “Joy Bangla cannot be suppressed. Joy Bangla.” Supporters present also joined in the chant.
Ivy had been granted bail by a higher court in the murder case involving rickshaw puller Tuhin, filed with Siddhirganj Police Station. The lower court had scheduled a hearing on the case’s final investigation report and Ivy’s renewed bail petition for Tuesday. Her lawyer sought renewed bail during the hearing, and the court granted the application.
Ivy’s lawyer, Advocate Awlad Hossain, said the hearing concerned the final report in the Tuhin murder case and Ivy’s renewed bail. He said the investigating officer had submitted a report under the Explosives Act, while the public prosecutor had not agreed to proceed with the trial. The defence questioned the legal validity of the process and sought renewed bail, which the court granted.
Narayanganj Court Police Inspector Md. Abdus Samad said Ivy had appeared because her renewed bail hearing was scheduled in a case filed with Siddhirganj Police Station. He said she made no statement in court. However, several lawyers chanted slogans as she was getting into her car, and police subsequently stopped them.
According to the case statement, rickshaw puller Tuhin was shot dead on July 20, 2024, in front of Dutch-Bangla Bank in the Shimrail area of Siddhirganj, along the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway. His wife, Aleya Akter Mim, filed a murder case with Siddhirganj Police Station on September 13 that year.
Former Narayanganj-4 MP Shamim Osman was named as the prime accused, while Ivy was listed as accused No. 11. The other accused include Golam Dastagir Gazi, Kaisar Hasnat, Nazrul Islam Babu, Shamim Osman’s son Ayon Osman and nephew Azmeri Osman. The case names 99 individuals, along with 300 unidentified people.
