The government expects electricity supply from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to the national grid to begin by November. Work is also progressing towards completing the fuel-loading or reactor-startup process for the plant’s second unit by June next year.
The information was shared at a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Science and Technology at the National Parliament House on Wednesday, October 14. The ministry later confirmed the development in a press release.
According to the statement, the initial physical and criticality tests for the Rooppur project have successfully begun. Following what the ministry described as productive discussions with Russia’s state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom, officials expressed hope that the plant would begin supplying electricity to the national grid by November.
On safety and technical matters, the ministry described Rooppur as a modern third-generation nuclear power facility. It said the project was being implemented in line with international standards and under the close supervision of experts. The meeting was also informed that international energy experts considered the project to be progressing on the right track.
Beyond electricity generation, work is continuing to expand the benefits of nuclear medicine to district-level healthcare facilities. Construction of the country’s first research vessel is also underway, the meeting was told.
The committee expressed optimism that the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project would be completed successfully within the stipulated timeframe.
The meeting was chaired by Ruhul Quddus Talukdar, also known as Dulu. Participants included Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam and committee members A Z M Rezwanul Haque, Md. Anwarul Islam, Mohammad Fahim Chowdhury, K M Babar, Sansila Jebrin, Salah Uddin, Mardia Momtaz and Md. Abdul Gafur.
