In the run-up to Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliamentary Election, five candidates have withdrawn their candidacies from the Dhaka-17 constituency, declaring their support for BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.
According to party and election sources, the candidates formally communicated their decision to step aside in favor of Tarique Rahman, citing party unity and strategic electoral considerations. The move is seen as an effort to consolidate votes and strengthen the BNP’s position in the constituency.
Election officials confirmed that the withdrawal process was carried out in accordance with electoral regulations. Once approved, the names of the withdrawn candidates will no longer appear on the ballot, leaving Tarique Rahman as the principal contender from his political platform in the constituency.
Political observers note that Dhaka-17 is considered a significant seat in the capital, and the unified backing may influence voter dynamics ahead of polling day. Supporters of the BNP described the decision as a demonstration of collective commitment to party leadership and electoral strategy.
The Election Commission has reiterated that all candidacy withdrawals must comply with prescribed deadlines and procedures to ensure transparency in the electoral process.
