Iran’s Sports and Youth Minister, Ahmad Donyamali, announced that the country will not participate in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is scheduled to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, citing ongoing geopolitical tensions and security concerns.

In a televised statement, Donyamali said the team’s participation is impossible given the current situation, especially after what Tehran describes as hostile actions by the United States and its allies, including airstrikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader and continued regional conflict that has killed thousands of Iranians.

He stressed that Iranian players would not be safe, particularly in the U.S., which is hosting the tournament, and that under no circumstances could Iran take part in the World Cup this year.

The announcement comes despite efforts by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who had said that Iran would be welcome to compete and had raised the issue with U.S. leadership, and even after assurances from U.S. officials that security for the Iranian team would be ensured.

Iran had already secured qualification and was drawn into Group G, with matches planned against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in U.S. cities.

FIFA has yet to issue an official statement on Iran’s withdrawal or how it might respond, including whether another nation could take Iran’s place in the tournament or whether sanctions might follow under FIFA rules for withdrawal.
