The suspect involved in a violent attack on a synagogue in Michigan had recently lost several family members in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, officials said, as investigators continue to examine the motive behind the incident.

The attack occurred on March 12, 2026, at Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, near Detroit. Authorities said a man drove a vehicle into the building before gunfire was reported, prompting an immediate response from security personnel stationed at the synagogue. The suspect, identified as Ayman Mohamed Ghazali, 41, was killed during the incident.

Temple Israel is one of the largest Reform Jewish congregations in the United States and houses religious facilities along with an early childhood center and school. At the time of the incident, dozens of children and staff members were inside the building. Security guards engaged the attacker quickly, preventing what officials say could have been a far more deadly outcome.

Investigators said Ghazali, a Lebanese-born naturalized U.S. citizen, had been living in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, and had worked at a Mediterranean restaurant in the area. He had entered the United States in 2011 on a spousal immigrant visa and became a U.S. citizen in 2016.

Local officials confirmed that the suspect had recently lost four relatives in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, including two brothers and two young children. The strike reportedly occurred earlier in March in the Lebanese town of Mashgharah, amid escalating regional tensions linked to broader Middle East conflicts.

Authorities say the suspect had shared images of his relatives killed in the strike on messaging platforms shortly before the attack. However, investigators have not yet determined whether the incident was directly motivated by the airstrike or by other factors.

The vehicle used in the attack reportedly contained flammable materials and fireworks, causing a fire after the crash. One security guard was injured when struck by the vehicle, and dozens of responding officers were treated for smoke inhalation. No civilians inside the synagogue were killed or seriously injured.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is leading the investigation and has described the event as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community. Officials are continuing to review the suspect’s background, online activity, and possible connections to extremist networks.

Following the incident, law-enforcement agencies across the United States increased security measures at religious institutions, particularly synagogues and community centers, amid concerns about potential copycat attacks and rising tensions linked to international conflicts.
